Picture Testing...New Lampwork Beads

Wednesday, February 28, 2007
Again, I didn't get decent picture of the reduction glass. I think I'm going to have to break down and figure out how to use the Macro lens on the new camera.

The below are new sets that I got decent pictures of. They will be up on eBay tomorrow. I will be have a customer appreciation week. There will be many $.99 auctions (starting Thursday) and a update of lampwork specials on the website (starting Friday). I will be sending out a news letter but I try to let my blog readers know first.

The above set is all Gaffer's bright and vivid. All the stringers and twisties have been encased. It took a while but it was worth it as soon as I opened the kiln.

The below pictures are of the same set...just different view. It has a base of copper blue and all 96 COE furnace glasses. It is much prettier than the photo shots.

That's it for me....back to the studio. I just need to do some photo testing and though you might want to see what I've been doing.

Have a great evening!

Website Updates

I didn't get decent pictures of the reduction glass beads...they are pretty! I will try again tomorrow.

I've been working on the website again. Mixed Media Jewelry has two Newsletters!!!

"Mixed Media Jewelry Newsletter" is specifically about News and Updates for and about our website. We won’t bombard your email box, it will be at most once or twice a month. I will send this out when I have new jewelry available.

"MMJ Lampwork Bead Notifications" is specifically designed to notify users when Mixed Media Jewelry lists lampwork beads on eBay, or the website. This list is a bit more active but still not more than eight emails a month.

Some of you have signed up for both. Some of you don’t know I have two Newsletters. Some of you might want to switch Newsletters. Either let me know or wait until I send the next one out. There will be a major update this Friday regarding beads.

The website how has a lampwork bead gallery page for your viewing pleasure.

That's it for me today...I'm off to the studio!

Have a happy, creative day!

New Lampwork Beads..."Cleaned My Desk" Beads

Tuesday, February 27, 2007
I started working on reduction glass yesterday. I'm pretty happy with the results. I'm not sure that they are the eBay colors...because they are going to be hard to photograph well. I liked them because they will work well with a metallic and iris seed beads. I will have pictures tomorrow.

The below is a set that I did to clear off my desk. Normally folks call these "End of Day" beads. At the end of the day, what's left on their desk or table is cleared off and then made into beads. I needed to clear my desk before I could start...I made beads with pile of stringers and twisties I had. I was moving from 104 COE glass to 96 COE so everything had to go. Then I really cleaned my desk. The below is the result of my cleaning session. They will go up on eBay later this week.

Today, I'm off to the studio. I'm not sure that it's a reduction glass day or not. My allergies are perstering me. (Reduction is done by turning up the propane and turning down the O2. Even with my ventilation, I get a slight smell of burning propane. It only takes a little to bother me.) So I think I might have to move to bigger and better ideas.

Have a happy, creative day!

Spring has arrived!!!!

Monday, February 26, 2007
Yesterday it was in the upper 70's here. It was wonderful weather for sitting behind a torch. Today it's suppose to be a high of 83 degrees...right now it's about 60 degrees already. It's great weather but summer will be here soon. Summer in Austin starts sometime late March or early April. That's 90 degree days until sometime in mid to late October. It's the land of never ending summer.

The below is some pastel hues of spring without the 'girly' pinks. It's one of those strands that can be used year round. That has been my aim lately. I know that each season has it's colors but just how many pieces of art jewelry in pink or pale blue do ya need?

The below has just about the same colors as above but I made a few flowers too. There's just something about flowers and fringe bracelets that I like.
Today and most of the week, I will be working on reduction glass. There are so many beautiful shades of metallic hues that I've seen in seed beads. So I'm taking several days to experiment with the metallic/reduction glasses. I should have some pictures in the next couple of days. to work for me. Got lots to do!

Playing with frit and reduction glass

Sunday, February 25, 2007
The below was a color test of a new lampwork bead set that I'm thinking about making. I like it but there are a couple things that can be improved on. I just haven't decided if I like it or not. it is. It's just large enough for a bracelet and maybe some matching earrings. It's all 96 COE with lots of reduction glass and silver.

I got some new glass in yesterday and made spacers to figure out what the color of the glass is. Just because it is one hue when in cane form doesn't mean that's the same color when it hits the flame. The flame or the heat of the kiln can change many glass colors. Copper Ruby, for example, has to be in the kiln for at least an hour before it strikes. BUT if you leave it in there too long, it gets very dark to the point it looks black. Since I have a long ramp period on my kilns, I have to do small sets at the end of my torch session. If I decide that the 'glass is flowing', I let that kiln ramp down and use another kiln.

Have a great day...I'm off to the studio. Got lots to do!!!!

Just Checked the Kiln

Saturday, February 24, 2007
I got up early...well, not really. It's just that I'm staying up later and sleeping later. Even though we have more sunshine here than most of the other areas of the country...there still isn't enough sunshine for me. I'm not much on grey, dreary days. Yesterday was on of the first totally grey (that it wasn't a howling rain included) day since we moved to Austin. When the days get longer, I will change my sleep patterns to the amount of sunshine and heat. In high summer, I normally nap in the afternoon because I can't get the studio cool enough to work. The hottest part of the day around here is around 4pm or it feels that way. In summer, it really doesn't start really cooling off until early in the morning. I still haven't gotten used to Austin weather. I have to's nice now.
This is a small lampwork set that I just made and cleaned. Just the right size for a bracelet. It's all 96 COE glass with sprinkles of different powdered frits.

I've been busting my hindparts making very complex beads with stringers, twisties, and lots of dots. Many are lovely beads, but I like the more straightforward beads with larger color blocks to make jewelry from. When there is a huge amount of color and texture happening, it seems like everything blends together on the bead. It would seem like the simpler beads take less time, they really don't. Well this small set didn't because I used a lot of clear accents. It's hard to tell by a photo what the clear really does. Anyway, the above does look much nicer in person.

I've been waiting for weeks for a certain tool to come's a squishier for disks and buttons...the one I wanted is handmade by Jeff from Inspirational Tools. I ordered one and I should get it late next week sometime. So hopefully, you will start seeing some buttons from me.

That's it for me...I've got beads to clean!!

Have a happy, creative day!

Glass Crayons

This is a set that I torched yesterday. As you can tell, summer is getting closer here. That or I got my glass crayons out.

I have should have some more pictures soon. I'm in the process of working on a new update to the website.

Have a great weekend!!!

New eBay Lampwork Auctions

Friday, February 23, 2007
Today was eBay day...that entails photos and written descriptions of the bead sets. I think that is my least favorite task of this business. I'd rather do my taxes than that. :-)

The below is a set that I have up on auction. If you like to see larger pics, just click the picture and it will take you to the auctions. Ebay lets me have larger pics than Blogger.

I do have to admit that I like the luster beads in both of these strands. I've ordered more I NEED more glass. It's that the luster beads make into beautiful jewelry.

Have a great evening...I'm off to clean beads.

New Lampwork...New Kiln!

Wednesday, February 21, 2007
I've been working the the studio, not coming out except for food and sleep. I've got lots of new glass that I'm playing with to see what it does. The below is a sample of what I've been doing. Click on the photo to enlarge them. I was actually very pleased on how they turned out. The set is very diverse...they can be dressed up or down...they would also look great with natural gemstones or pearls.

My Chili Pepper rolled over and died. So I ran out yesterday to BlueMoon Glass and picked up a BlueBird. I did a test run of spacers last night...after I spent a couple hours figuring out how to program this puppy. Something must of clicked into my brain and poof, all the information finally fit together.

I'll be glad when the new kiln smell is gone. It takes a couple of firings and that doesn't take me long to get that taken care of...but it smells until then. I'm glad that it's in the 60's today, I can open all the windows and doors. This time of year is one of the nicest weather in Austin.

If anyone has a better idea to store frit...please let me know. I use a lot of it and need the availability to grab it when I'm working. There has just got to be a better way. studio is calling me.....I've got lots to do. I'm in the process of working on smaller bead sets for the website. It's bracelet time for many designers (I fully understand) and I've had a lot of requests. So hopefully next week, I will be doing an update to the website.

Have a happy, creative day!

New Lampwork Beads...thinking of SPRING!!!

Friday, February 16, 2007
I've been out and about today. I needed a haircut and do a bit of shopping. You know, the typical things that we all have to do. Even got all my packages mailed...thank you!!!! Even stopped off at the cell phone place...I splurged and bought my self a Bluetooth so that I can talk on the phone hands free. I don't think I can talk on the phone and be on the torch...the noise of the ventilation and oxycon...but I can talk and make errands...or pickup the house. I'm all about multi-tasking!!!!!!!

I got in a 'spring' mode at the torch. :-) I've had some requests for smaller sets. (Most of my sets are large and I'm beginning to like doing small bracelet sets.)

The below is a small set that I finished yesterday evening. It's 104 COE, all Lauscha. The pale blueish green looks like green moonstone in person. It's a very lovely glass color. The purples are very similar to some amethyst that I have. This small set would make two fringe style bracelets and a couple pair of earrings.

Ok...back to bead cleaning for me!

Have a great weekend!

Fresh Lampwork Beads...New eBay Auctions!

Thursday, February 15, 2007
I think I'm getting better with my photos...I'm still not where I need to be but I'm getting closer.

The below beads are from a small series called "Kachina". It's only a three part series. I liked the style and the design but not well enough to keep making a large amount of them. Currently they are listed on eBay. I have six sets that just went up this evening.
The below is another part of "Kachina." The focal on this one is very kewl in person. The "Kachina" sets will make some jewelry designer very happy; they are very diverse and can be used in a number of different designs.
The below is called "Inner Child"
I've had a couple people ask me why Ebay. Well, I like doing it. It give me time to work on my arsenal of beadmaking skills. There are a huge amount of beads that I really enjoy making but really aren't in my jewelry design style. So this give me the pleasure of making the beads while somebody else can make the jewelry.

Back to cleaning beads! Have a wonderful evening!

Afternoon Naps

Every once in a while, ya gotta take some time for yourself. That's what I'm doing today...I'm making beads for ME!

The below is a picture of Nox (black) and Sugie napping under my desk. I'm normally in the office or at the torch. They aren't allowed in the's housed in a separate building so I don't have to work about them or the dogs getting their paws cut. So the furballs take most of their afternoon naps in the office.

Have a happy, creative day!

New Lampwork Bead Sets

Wednesday, February 14, 2007
I finally got decent pictures of the below sets. The blues are vivid and actually much nicer in hand. The 96 coe glasses are the cream of the crop...nothing can compare to their color.

The below is a new line that I'm developing. They are sliders, large hole beads that can be put on a chain, seed beaded together, or made into earrings. They are very useful in jewelry designs. I really like working with them. The below set is a southwester style made from 104 coe glasses.
The below is a large set of 96 coe glass. This is one of the nicest raku sets that I've made.
That's it for me...I've got to get back to the torch. I've working on a BRIGHT set of beads. Hopefully, I can get decent pics tomorrow.

Have a great day!

Got Blue?

Tuesday, February 13, 2007
I'm doing a post and run...I will have more pictures soon of lampwork beads. I've been really busy at the torch the last couple of days.

The below is all 96 COE glasses, mostly Gaffer. The blues are bright and vivid. I could never get these colors in the 104 COE glasses.
I'm currently work on more sliders and more southwester style designs.

Have a happy, creative day!

Slider Beads...simple lampwork for everyday wear.

Sunday, February 11, 2007
I've been working on some everyday beads. Beads that can be dressed up or worn on the weekend. Since in Texas you can literally cook an egg on the sidewalk in summer, I wanted to make beads that were not hot to wear. This is one of the designs that I've come up with. These are large hole beads that fit on a chain or silk ribbon. Easy to change and easy to wear.

The below focal was an experiment with reduction glasses. It turned out pretty well except the reduction areas of the bead are tough to photograph.
That's it for me...I'm off to the studio today. Got lot to do...actually, I've got lots of beads to clean.

Have a great weekend!

Up Late

Saturday, February 10, 2007
The website sale is coming along well...actually, it was a bit overwhelming. Thank you everyone! I hope you enjoy your goodies!!!!

There are very few lampwork specials left. My packing area, in the studio, is totally trashed. The Post Office ladies think we are nuts. My website couldn't handle the is great but it doesn't take the number of hits I guess. We have an outstanding ticket with them to find out how we can correct the problem. A couple items sold twice and we didn't get inventory updates as quick as we needed today.

Hopefully, I will have the lampwork gallery updated. Not that it's a big deal to most people, it's just nice eye candy and helps for customs. I use it as a color and glass reaction tracking system. A picture is worth a thousand words.

The below is a finished custom. Actually, it is one of my favorite pieces that I've made for a long time. It looks much better in person than in the photo. A lot of my finished pieces, I don't take pictures of so you don't see them. Most of the jewelry that I make for myself or most of the customs rarely make it to the photo table. I'm working hard to change my evil ways.

I'm getting the bug to make more jewelry. Jewelry has been on the back burner for a bit. I've just been very focused on beadmaking for the past several months. I actually don't have enough time in the day to get enough beads sets done and do the experimental development that I need to do. Next week, I want to start a new series of reduction glasses but I bet that it will be put off for a couple weeks. Right now, I'm working on a huge grouping of Raku beads. I will have pictures soon.

The below is a photo that I dearly love. Currently, I'm out looking for glass to match this color scheme. Hopefully some it it will arrive next week from Canada. Calienta Art Glass has some of the more luscious colors. It's all hand pulled cane, mostly transparents, that make up into some totally beautiful beads. That's it for me. I've off to do some paperwork and then snoozeland.

Have a great weekend!

Feb Newsletter & Bead Sale

Friday, February 09, 2007
Everyone getting ready for SPRING? Well, I am...I'm in the mist of a website cleaning and re-do. I'm streamlining...less is more. I’m dropping a few sections of the website and adding new ones. I will be dropping the lampwork ‘specials’ and the ‘focals’ sections. It’s time for the ‘Czech beads’ section to be leaving too. I’ll be adding smaller bead sets area and orphans area on the website. Most of my larger sets will be on eBay for the rest of the year.

We also have a new camera so we will be taking all new pictures. So it’s a pre-spring cleaning time! (which translates, that I'd rather clearance it than re-take picutres) The clearance will last until the end of the month. After than, some of the sections will be gone forever.

All lampwork bead sets and focals are now 50% off the marked price.

New Lampwork Bead Sets

Thursday, February 08, 2007
Spring is beginning in Austin...yeppers, I've got robins, bluejays, and pack of squirrels hanging out in my backyards. There's a robin's nest close to my office window. The below bead set is called, "Robin's Nest". It's currently up on eBay.

This one is called, "Stucco" and has a southwestern favor to it. It actually could be used in several different jewelry designs. I liked it enough that I almost kept it for my designing pleasures. It's also currently up on eBay.
I've decided to stay with eBay and just make beads for a while. I'm working on a lot of new designs, playing with new glass, and developing my skill base. It works for me currently. I am beginning to get the fever to make some jewelry though. Even if it's just for myself.
Have a happy, creative day!

New Lampwork Beads

Monday, February 05, 2007
I'm in the stage of working on several new projects at the same time. I'm finishing up a custom, that takes a while because it's one of my waterfall necklaces. I'm tearing though my stash of beads looking for some of the fringe beads. I know I have them, I just can't find them. Ya know, I've found that I may not be as organized as I though I was. It looks like a small explosion has gone off in my bead room. I should be finished with that project soon and I will put that room back together again. No pictures...this time, it's actually kinda embarrassing. It's so bad, I might have to stop and clean up a bit. I'm out of space to work now.

Then I'm also working on a small series...lots of new shapes and some interesting new color schemes. The below is sample of the colors that I'm working with. All the beads have been created from furnace glass.

Here's another lampwork beads set...the base is a Gaffer salmon. It's a lot like the old peach blow glass. It's really a pretty color but if you work it too hot, it turns white. It's hard to tell what the color is because I've also used frits on top of the glass.
I've also decided to make buttons. I have one more tool to find and I will start that project. Except, I think it will be on going.

That's it for me...I've got to get rolling today. Lots to do!!!!!!

Have a happy, creative day!

Go Colts!

Sunday, February 04, 2007
No pictures today, I've got a kiln full of beads. Plus sink full of beads that I haven't cleaned yet. So pics coming later this week.

I'm originally from Indianapolis so I'm totally amazed that the Colts actually are playing today.

Have a super day!

New Lampwork...and Phil, my Hero!

Saturday, February 03, 2007
That's weather predicting chubby rodent made my day! That's my hero, Phil.

I'm up late, I worked in the studio doing some color testing. Geez, I need to get a life. Anyway, the below is a new's all Lauscha. I really like the strawberry glass and the olives hues. They have potential. This set will go up on eBay next week sometime.

Here's a picture that my Dad emailed to me. Ya know, I can relate to this sign. There are just some people that really shouldn't breed.
Everyone have a wonderful weekend!

Lampwork Focals...Silver Green Reduction

Thursday, February 01, 2007
Here's some interesting reactions with Silver Green furnace glass. There's lots of silver on these beady babies and I did spot reduction to bring out the metallic highlights.
Focal #1 (above) started with white furnace glass, then was encased in clear. It's lighter than the other focals.
Focal #2 (above) is mostly clear with a deep grape on the ends.
Focal #3 (above) is very, very interesting. This focal has the base of clear only but I added some silver green shards that I blew. The metallic highlights are kewl as kewl with lots of bronze. The shard turned blue under the flame or in the kiln.

That's all for today!

Have a happy, creative day!
